British, 1895 - 1974David Jones was a water-colourist, etcher, engraver, poet and also an author. He first studied at the Camberwell and later the Westminster Schools of Art, as a pupil of Bernard Meninsky. In 1921 he became a Catholic convert and went to Ditchling to join Eric Gill's community. There he was taught wood engraving by Desmond Chute. He joined Gill when he moved to Wales and he became one of the leading illustrators of books published by The Golden Cockerel Press, some of them written by himself though his best engravings were made for The Chester Play of the Deluge, 1927 |
